What started as a happy celebration in Bengaluru turned into a tragic stampede. After Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the IPL 2025 final, huge crowds gathered to welcome the team home. Sadly, the celebration ended in a deadly crush that killed 11 people and injured 47 others.

In IPL 2025 final celebration fans were excited after RCB beat Punjab Kings in a close match on Tuesday night. It was the team’s first-ever IPL title win in 18 years. People came out in large numbers to celebrate in the streets of Bengaluru, also known as India’s tech capital.

Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that most of the victims were young. He confirmed that around 200,000 to 300,000 people had gathered, even though the stadium could only hold 35,000.

“No one expected such a big crowd,” the Chief Minister said. “The police force was fully deployed, but the number of people was too high.”

Because of the crowd size, officials cancelled the street parade. However, the damage was already done. People were pushed, stepped on, and some lost their lives.

One woman, brought to a hospital in a wheelchair, said:
“I was near the entrance. Suddenly, the crowd pushed. I couldn’t breathe. I fainted.”

An ambulance was seen with a young man inside struggling to breathe. Abandoned shoes were scattered on the ground signs of the chaos that had taken place.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “absolutely heartrending.” Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar called the deaths “beyond tragic” and offered support to the families. Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who watched the final in Ahmedabad, said, “We celebrated with you yesterday, and we mourn with you today.”

RCB released a statement expressing deep sadness.
“We are deeply anguished by what happened. The safety of our fans is most important,” the team said.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said managing the huge crowd was very difficult. He added that the cricket organisers had shortened the celebration programme after noticing the crowd surge.

Despite the tragedy, RCB’s social media account posted a video of fans cheering as the team waved from a bus. The post was later deleted after criticism.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said that the organisers inside the stadium were unaware of the stampede until later. “Our hearts go out to the victims,” he said.

Call for Better Crowd Control

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered a full inquiry into the stampede. “This should never have happened. The pain of this tragedy has erased the joy of victory,” he said.

Deadly stampedes are sadly not rare in India. Large religious festivals and events often lack proper crowd control. Earlier this year, a stampede at the Kumbh Mela religious fair killed 30 people.

This latest incident in Bengaluru shows the urgent need for better planning and crowd management during big public celebrations.

Conclusion

What should have been a night of happiness and celebration for Bengaluru and RCB fans turned into a tragedy. As India mourns the young lives lost, many are calling for stronger safety rules at large events to prevent such disasters in the future.
